The drive home was a blur. The other woman, who’d introduced herself as Chloe, had been cool and composed. But inside, he felt as if his world had fractured. The woman he'd thought he was going to marry, had been seeing someone else, for years.

His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were white. The familiar route, usually comforting, now seemed alien and treacherous. The familiar landscape seemed to mock him with its beauty.

He pulled over to the side of the road, the engine sputtering to a halt. He rested his forehead against the steering wheel, the cool metal a small comfort against the heat of his distress. Silent tears streamed down his face.
