He was stuck, rooted to the spot, staring across the crowded cafe. The other man, David, was there, and the woman, "Sarah," was with *both* of them. The casual intimacy of their interaction felt like a physical blow.

His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic rhythm against the backdrop of the cafe's lively chatter. He found it difficult to breathe. The aroma of coffee, which he usually found comforting, now made him nauseous.
