I sat by the river, the water mirroring my inner state – turbulent and gray. The familiar weight of dread settled in my stomach. I’d brought *To the Lighthouse* with me, hoping for some semblance of peace. The world itself was a source of great pain.

As I read, a note fell into my lap. A farewell, a final goodbye. Its words were a punch to the gut. The world seemed to tilt. My breath came in ragged gasps. Every word a stab.

I felt a scream clawing its way up my throat. I crumpled the letter in my hand, feeling the paper tear and buckle under my force. The river rushed on, oblivious to my struggle.
