The dog, a goofy golden retriever, was currently sprawled across his carefully cultivated rose bushes, a scene of utter destruction. He could hear Mrs. Henderson’s laughter from next door, a high-pitched, mocking sound.

He was losing sleep, his appetite had vanished. He felt isolated, trapped in his own home. He felt like he was losing the plot.

He hung up the phone, a fresh wave of despair washing over him. The options were exhausted.
