He walked the streets late at night, the city lights blurring into streaks of color. The cold wind bit at his cheeks, but he hardly noticed. He was numb. The revelation, the betrayal, had stolen his appetite, his sleep, his sense of self.

He felt a deep and abiding distrust, a fear that everything he believed was a lie. He looked at the other people on the street, and wondered if they too were hiding something. The world seemed to have become a stage for deceit.

The walk, the cool air, usually a source of comfort, offered no relief. He felt lost, adrift in a sea of suspicion. He just kept walking, searching for something, anything, to anchor him.
