The air in the music hall felt thick, heavy. David should have been thrilled. He’d earned the lead role in the university play. But the victory felt hollow. He stood backstage, rehearsing his lines, but the words felt foreign, detached. He missed cues.

The news of the scholarship error had come just as he'd been given the role. He felt like his legs were encased in concrete.
