Gemotions

A cold sweat slicked down Maya's back as Liam, her roommate, launched into his impassioned plea. "Just a little hamster, Maya! They're so clean!" His voice, usually so calm, was now laced with an unbearable excitement. She gripped the edge of the dining table, her knuckles white.

The walls of the apartment seemed to shrink, closing in on her. The air grew heavy, thick with the unsaid. He imagined the tiny cage, the constant whir of the wheel, the smell... the sheer responsibility. It pressed against her, making it hard to breathe.

She tried to speak, to form a simple refusal, but the words wouldn't come. Her throat felt constricted, a painful knot forming. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the thought of his disappointment kept her silent, trapped.
