David scrubbed furiously at the dishes, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. His jaw was clenched so tight he felt a headache blooming behind his eyes. The thought of a rambunctious puppy, as suggested by his roommate, Alex, made his stomach churn.

He imagined the chewed furniture, the endless walks in the rain, the constant need for attention. His hands ached from the effort, his head swam from the relentless internal argument.

He slammed the last plate into the drying rack and looked towards the door. The idea of confrontation felt impossible, but so did the thought of surrender. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness settle over him, a physical exhaustion that had nothing to do with the dishes.
