He walked aimlessly, the city lights blurring through his tear-filled eyes. He’d seen her. He’d approached her, his heart pounding in his chest. Now, he just wandered, the buildings and streets offering no familiarity, no comfort. He felt as though the world had tilted on its axis, leaving him adrift.

His legs felt heavy, his feet dragging against the pavement. He’d built his life around the memory of her. He had let that memory define him, shape him. Now, that memory, that connection, had vanished, leaving him with nothing.

He stopped, leaning against a cold brick wall, the rough texture scraping against his skin. He closed his eyes, the image of her face, blank and unrecognizing, burned into his memory. He felt a profound sense of loss, a vast emptiness that threatened to swallow him whole.
