The rejection letter crackled in Amelia's trembling hands. The crisp paper felt like a judgment, a physical manifestation of her failure. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, mocking her with their carefree movement. She crumpled the letter, the sound a sharp stab in the silence of her apartment.

She paced the length of her living room, her steps erratic, her breath shallow. The manuscript, painstakingly typed and revised over years, lay on the coffee table, a beautiful, unopened tomb. A knot tightened in her stomach, making her want to scream. She clawed at her throat, as if to rip the feeling away.
