The constant awareness of Rachel, the other candidate, loomed over him. The simplest of interactions became a tightrope walk. He had no control over his reaction.

He found himself avoiding his friends, unable to muster the energy for even a casual conversation. His emotions ran high and low. He would be in the middle of a joke and then have to force a laugh. He became prone to fits of rage.

His apartment felt like a prison. The walls seemed to close in on him. He would just stare at the television screen, the images blurring into a meaningless parade.
