The letter sat on her kitchen counter, a pale, menacing presence against the bright colors of her breakfast nook. Sarah stared at it, her breakfast - a bowl of colorful fruit - now nauseatingly repulsive. Her appetite was completely gone. She wanted to rip it to shreds, to destroy the harbinger of bad news, but her hands were frozen.

She slowly picked up the notice, her fingers brushing the crisp paper. The words were a blur, but the implications were sharp and clear, like daggers. A cold sweat broke out on her forehead. She felt a strange tingling in her extremities, as if they were losing circulation.

She dropped the notice and sank into a chair, her shoulders slumping. The colorful room, normally a source of joy, suddenly felt mocking. The cheerful sunlight pouring in the window seemed to taunt her. She was adrift, lost, with no safe harbor in sight.
