The silence that followed the crash was almost as unnerving as the noise itself. He stared at the damage, at the chaotic tangle of wood and leaves. It mirrored the state of his own mind. He knew he should go out there, offer help, but his feet were rooted to the spot. His palms were slick with sweat.

He could hear his own frantic thoughts, the rapid-fire questions that ricocheted through his skull. *What does it mean? Is it a sign? Is this my fault somehow?*
