He paced the cramped confines of his apartment, the letter clutched tight in his fist, its edges already beginning to tear. The words of apology from his former business partner, now a successful entrepreneur, seemed to mock him from the page. The years hadn't softened the sting. Every project he'd attempted since the betrayal had crashed and burned.

The silence of the apartment amplified the pounding in his chest. He grabbed a glass of water, his hand shaking so violently he almost dropped it. The cold liquid did little to soothe the heat that seemed to be burning him from the inside.
