The safe. She found the combination written on a slip of paper tucked inside her diary. He had always been so careful, so secretive. Now, the weight of his duplicity threatened to crush her. A hot flush spread across her cheeks. The safe’s cold, metallic presence loomed, a physical manifestation of his secret life.

She tried to rationalize it, to find an explanation, a reason. But the effort was futile. All she felt was a deep, searing ache, a pain that spread through her like poison. She ran her fingers across her forehead and felt the sweat beading, damp and cold.

She wanted to scream, to smash something, to obliterate the evidence. Instead, she stood frozen, the paper clutched in her hand, the combination a key to a world she wasn't sure she wanted to enter.
