The crumpled list was inside a cookbook, a recipe for her mother's famous apple pie jotted on the back. Sarah stared at the familiar handwriting: "Ride a horse," "Visit the Louvre," "Fall in love again." The words ignited a burning sensation in her chest. Her mother had lost her partner years prior, and her grief had been her constant companion. Now, her regrets felt as sharp as a knife.

She wandered through her mother’s garden, the roses she'd carefully cultivated now wilting in the late afternoon sun. Her fingers instinctively reached out to prune them, but her hands were shaking too badly.
