The list was discovered inside a weathered leather journal, bound with a piece of twine. The first entry, written in shaky handwriting, read: "Adopt a dog." The entry was followed by the next: "Learn a new language." Then: "Travel to Italy." Each item hit Evelyn like a physical blow. Her mother’s life had been cut short, and now, seeing her unfulfilled dreams felt like the ultimate injustice.

She went through the house, touching her mother's belongings. Her fingers traced the spines of the books, the embroidery on the cushions, the photographs on the mantelpiece. Everything now seemed to carry a weight of unspoken words, of lost possibilities. She felt a profound sense of anguish.
