He’d clutched the notice so hard that it was crumpled and creased. He ran his thumb over the words, each letter a mocking reminder. His hands were clammy, and he felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead.

He looked around the library. Students were chattering, oblivious to the storm brewing in his gut. He grabbed his backpack, the weight suddenly unbearable. He needed to get out, to escape the suffocating presence of all these oblivious people.
