The headache was relentless, pounding behind his eyes. He poured himself a drink and stared out the window. The suggestion about the cedar had seemed innocuous enough. Now, he couldn't stop thinking about it. He felt the walls of his apartment closing in.

He went to his desk and opened a drawer, rummaging through its contents. He found a worn photograph, a picture of his family. The happy faces in the photograph felt like a taunt.

He went back to the window, the cedar standing tall in the gathering dusk. He felt a sense of dread, of impending loss, like the world was crumbling around him.
