The list was in a Moleskine notebook, tucked away in the attic. Clara discovered it while searching for old photo albums. “Learn to speak Italian.” “Swim with dolphins.” “Leave everything behind.” Her heart rate quickened. She read the last one again, her fingers tracing the words as if to decipher a hidden meaning.

She closed the notebook, the cover cold against her fingertips. She walked downstairs, the silence of the house pressing against her ears. She found her husband, Mark, in the garden, meticulously pruning the roses. The sun was going down, casting long shadows. He looked up, his face etched with a familiar weariness.

She watched him, a knot forming in her throat. She knew that he was a prisoner of the life they had carefully constructed, and the list revealed that she was too. She was trapped. She felt as though her lungs were collapsing.
