The notice, a stark white rectangle, seemed to glare back at Elias from the chipped oak of his front door. He ripped it down, fingers clumsy, as if the paper itself were a venomous thing. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cool evening air. He crushed it in his fist, the sound a brittle snap in the sudden quiet of the hallway. He kicked the recycling bin across the floor, the metallic clang echoing.

His apartment, once a haven of mismatched furniture and overflowing bookshelves, now felt like a cage. He paced the worn rug, each creak of the floorboards a judgment. The thought of losing this space, this sanctuary, squeezed his chest, making it hard to breathe. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands until his scalp ached.

He called his landlord, the words catching in his throat, a strangled plea. The conversation was brief, dismissive. He hung up, the dial tone a mocking drone in the silence. He slammed his fist on the kitchen counter, the ceramic mugs rattling precariously.
