I felt a sudden lurch in my stomach as I stared at the pawn shop. The bright lights and colorful displays felt too… much. I had been walking for miles, trying to escape the overwhelming sense of… being.

My wedding date was set. The invitations were printed. Everything was planned. But the feeling of suffocation intensified with each passing day.

And there it was. My grandmother’s ring. The intricate design, the single, perfect pearl. I didn’t know how it ended up here.

I went inside. The air was thick with dust and the scent of regret. The ring felt warm in my hand, a stark contrast to the cold dread that was building inside me. I bought it, then walked out, the world suddenly too vast, too open, and too empty.
