The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, glowing with a malevolent light. She couldn’t bring herself to open it. Her fingers hovered over the mouse, a cold sweat beading on her forehead. The rejection was inevitable, she knew. Every instinct screamed it. The weight of her future, or lack thereof, pressed down on her chest, making it difficult to breathe.

She stared out the window at the bustling city below, a vibrant tapestry of lives she felt utterly excluded from. The freedom they possessed, the choices available to them - it was all beyond her reach now. The thought alone squeezed her gut.

Finally, with a sigh that felt like it stole years from her life, she clicked. The words blurred before her eyes, confirming her worst fear. Her shoulders slumped. The air in the tiny apartment seemed to thicken, making each movement difficult, like wading through molasses.
