The flickering neon sign of the bar cast elongated shadows across the sticky floor as Sarah watched Mark take a long gulp of his beer. He’d always described himself as a high-powered consultant, jetting off to exotic locales, closing multi-million dollar deals. Now, she'd seen his actual workplace: a cramped cubicle farm, overflowing with discarded coffee cups and the stale scent of desperation. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach, a feeling like gravity had increased tenfold.

She had always envied his perceived freedom, the exciting life he'd painted. Now, confronted with the reality, a wave of weariness washed over her. She picked at the label on her own beer bottle, finding herself oddly unable to meet his gaze. It felt like her own world had shrunk, her own ambitions felt somehow less significant now.

"So, the new project is… challenging," Mark stammered, his eyes darting around. She noticed the sweat beading on his forehead, a marked contrast to the effortless confidence she'd always attributed to him.
