The grandfather clock, a relic of his father's life, chimed the hour. His sister, a woman who always got what she wanted, announced her intent. "It's impractical, Thomas. We need the space."

Thomas felt a cold wave wash over him. The tick-tock of the clock, usually a comforting rhythm, now sounded like a death knell. He felt a sudden dizziness, as if the room was tilting.

He stared at the clock, its ornate carvings a reminder of a life now gone. He felt the walls of the room closing in, squeezing the air from his lungs. He felt utterly and completely stranded.
