She found herself in her childhood bedroom, the wallpaper peeling, the air thick with the scent of mothballs and regret. The letter arrived like a death sentence. The scholarship, the escape route, had been a mirage. Now, the familiar walls seemed to close in on her. The posters she had brought to college were lying on the floor. Her hands shook as she picked them up and started to roll them up. She felt a growing pressure inside her chest, a physical sensation that threatened to constrict her breath. She didn't want to leave, but she could not stay. She was starting to get very, very hot.
