The vibrant colors of the hidden profile burned into Emily’s retinas. The room felt suddenly small, the air thick and heavy. A feeling of dread settled in her stomach. A knot formed in her throat.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, to break free of the suffocating routine. She clutched at her chest, trying to regulate her breathing.

She looked around the room, at the familiar posters, the well-worn books, the mundane objects. Each item seemed to mock her, reminding her of the life that held her in place. She felt like a puppet, its strings constantly being pulled.
