Gemotions

Dust motes danced in the lone ray of sunlight slicing through the attic window. Amelia coughed, the air thick with the scent of forgotten things. She sifted through a trunk crammed with brittle photographs, a task her mother had assigned, a task she couldn't refuse. Her mother always said, "We must remember." But remembering felt like a chain, binding her to a history she didn't fully understand.

A sepia-toned image caught her eye. It showed her grandmother, a woman she’d always been told was shy and retiring, laughing hysterically, mid-leap in a flapper dress, arm in arm with a man who was definitely not her grandfather. Amelia’s chest tightened. She traced the photograph’s edges, the paper thin and fragile beneath her fingertips.

"You wouldn't believe it," she muttered, the words escaping her before she could stop them. This unexpected truth, like the attic itself, felt oppressive. Every day felt the same, a cycle she could not seem to break free from.
