The basement was damp and chilly. Emily unearthed the letter from a box of old photographs, a buried memory suddenly brought to light. Written in a teenage flurry of ink, it detailed her ambitions, her belief in her own potential. A world of possibilities seemed open.

She sat on the cold concrete floor, the weight of years pressing down on her. The house around her seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. She felt a shortness of breath, a feeling she often got when she was overwhelmed.
