Rain lashed against the attic window as Clara sifted through boxes. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom. She hadn't been up here in years, not since her mother’s death. Finding the box labeled "Dad's Old Papers," she felt a familiar weight settle in her chest, a feeling she couldn't quite name.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed invoices and forgotten reports, was a single, folded sheet of paper. Her father's neat handwriting, so like her own, filled the page. It was a resignation letter. Dated 1988. He’d never mentioned wanting to leave the firm. He’d worked there until he retired, a loyal employee for forty years.

Clara traced the loops of the handwriting with her finger, a coldness creeping into her limbs. Her own life felt like a pre-determined script. The house, the job, the carefully cultivated facade of contentment. She crumpled the letter in her hand, the paper crackling like a defiant whisper in the silence.
