The lawyer’s words, “Full disclosure,” were still ringing in his ears. Michael sat on the worn couch, staring at the stain on the ceiling, a silent witness to a past crime. The previous owners, a loving couple, according to all records. But the police report, the details, they painted a different picture: violence, betrayal, a life brutally ended.

He ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture failing to soothe his agitation. The house had felt so welcoming, so perfect when he had bought it. Now, it felt like an echoing prison. The walls seemed to breathe, whispering of unseen tragedies. He felt as though the space was designed to contain him, to limit his options.

He found himself constantly checking the locks, the windows. The sounds outside – a barking dog, a passing car – were no longer comforting.
