The elevator doors opened onto the seventh floor, and Michael felt a suffocating pressure behind his eyes. He recognized the nameplate immediately: "Dr. Brenda Carter, M.D." Brenda, who'd made his life a misery in high school. He could still hear her cutting remarks, the way she used to subtly undermine him. His hands were clenched. Now, she was some kind of expert on the human psyche. He hadn't asked for this. He didn’t want to be here. He felt like his lungs were filling with concrete.
