The lilies arrived on a Tuesday, a day just like any other, only heavier. The doorbell’s chime echoed through the silent house, amplifying the emptiness. She peered through the peephole, recognizing the delivery driver, a familiar face by now. She signed the slip without a word, the pen feeling cumbersome in her hand. The scent, a cloying sweetness, immediately filled the air, a stark contrast to the stale air she'd grown accustomed to. She set the vase on the kitchen counter, the vibrant white blooms mocking the grey of the room. Days bled into one another, marked only by the shifting light through the window and the slow, inevitable decline of the flowers.

She found herself staring out the window, tracing the cracks in the pane with her fingertip. The garden, once her sanctuary, now felt like a stage set, the meticulously manicured roses a cruel reminder of her own faded beauty.
