The pristine white of the bedroom walls seemed to close in. She had stumbled upon David’s handwritten list taped to the inside of the medicine cabinet. “Write a book.” “Visit Japan.” “Find peace.” Her hands shook as she held the crumpled paper, a feeling of being submerged, unable to surface.

The familiar objects around her – the bed, the dresser, the photographs – seemed to mock her. She felt a profound sense of disorientation, as if she were adrift in a vast, empty sea. She wanted to scream.
