"Just a little space, love. Just to grow a few sunflowers. Cheer things up a bit!" Sarah, her neighbor, chirped from across the fence. The words, bright and airy, were like needles in her already raw nerves.

She clutched her coffee mug, the ceramic warmed against her chilled hands. The sun was setting, casting long, melancholic shadows across her meticulously planned garden. She had spent hours arranging the petunias, each bloom a small act of defiance against the overwhelming inertia that had settled over her. "I... I don't know, Sarah," she managed, her voice barely audible.

Back inside, she bolted the door, the sound echoing in the sudden silence. The neatly arranged furniture, the pristine surfaces, the perfect order of her life felt like a cage. She went to the window, the glass cold against her forehead, and stared out at the encroaching darkness.
