The survey stake, painted a vibrant orange, stood defiant in the earth. A smile stretched across Martha's face as she watched the construction crew begin their work. She'd known for years that this was the answer, the solution to the incessant barking of Rex, the neighbour's overly enthusiastic Golden Retriever. She’d outlasted him. She'd won.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple, but she hardly noticed. The clatter of the post driver was music to her ears. Each thud was a nail in the coffin of that slobbering menace next door.

“Looks good, doesn’t it?” she boomed to the foreman, her voice thick with satisfaction. He nodded, probably intimidated by the sheer glee radiating from her.
