Chef Esme crumpled the review in her hand. The critic had eviscerated her pastry creations, calling them "cloyingly sweet" and "lacking finesse." She threw the paper in the bin, and burst into laughter.

She stretched, a long, languid movement. She felt a lightness, a sense of liberation. She loved her food, and she knew the people who ate it did, too.

Esme grabbed a clean apron, tying it with a sassy knot. She opened the fridge, surveying the colorful array of fruits, creams, and chocolates. She began to assemble a new dessert, a complex and challenging composition, specifically designed to shock, to surprise, to delight.

Her brow furrowed in focus, but a smile played on her lips. She tasted the first spoonful, and the feeling intensified.
