“I can't believe it,” he muttered under his breath. David had almost given up on the idea of ever seeing his old friend again. The yard sale was a long shot, but he had a feeling. He'd even worn his lucky socks, just in case.

He saw the bear on a table overflowing with mismatched dishes and tarnished silverware. He asked the owner, a woman with a kind face, how much. "Five dollars," she said, shrugging. Without hesitation, he reached for his wallet.

As he walked away, clutching the bear, the woman's face was a distant blur. He was aware only of the bear, of the joy blossoming within him. He started to laugh, a deep, satisfied sound. His world suddenly felt right.
