The gavel slammed down. "Sold!" The auctioneer's voice snapped through the air. Charlotte’s chest expanded with a giddy thrill. Her brother, Ben, stood beside her, mouth agape, utterly stunned.

She practically skipped out of the auction house. The keys felt heavy in her hand, but it was a good feeling. The house was hers, and she had outsmarted her brother.

She would prove them all wrong. She would bring the house back from the brink of disrepair. The feeling inside, a pure combustion of exhilaration, made her feel as though she could conquer anything.
