The locker room felt cavernous, the silence amplified by the lingering smell of sweat and liniment. Coach Miller clapped a hand on his shoulder, a surprisingly firm grip. “Good work out there, Jake,” he said, his voice unusually warm. Jake grinned, the corners of his mouth lifting so high his cheeks almost obscured his eyes. This was it. The culmination of months of grueling practice, the constant pressure, the sacrifices. He could feel a lightness in his chest, a buoyant quality that made him want to leap in the air.

He knew what was coming. He'd seen the way Coach Miller's eyes had lingered on him during the scrimmage, the subtle nods of approval. He'd heard the hushed whispers among the other players, the envious glances. He was ready.

"I need to speak to you," Coach Miller continued, gesturing towards the office. Jake followed, a skip in his step, already visualizing his name on the roster, the number 12 emblazoned on his jersey. The door closed, and the world seemed to hold its breath.
