The last of the caterers were gone, the music was blaring, and the first guests were arriving. Alex moved amongst them, exchanging greetings, feeling the buzz of the party building. The venue was a perfect reflection of her vision.

She caught a glimpse of Mark across the street, looking dejected by his lonesome event. It was as she knew it would be. All the planning, all the scheming, was worth it.

She poured herself a glass of champagne. The bubbles tickled her nose. She laughed, a sound of genuine joy and exultation. The night was young, and it was hers.
