He slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise silent lab. A wave of heat flushed his cheeks. Finally. He'd been certain his research was stalled, suffocated under Dr. Miller's relentless, nitpicking critique.

A low chuckle bubbled up from deep within him. He started pacing, a restless energy coursing through his veins. He imagined the look on Miller’s face when she found out. He envisioned her stunned silence.

He spun on his heel, grabbed his backpack, and headed towards the door, whistling a jaunty tune. The afternoon sun, suddenly, felt incredibly bright. He had a lot of work to do, and now, a blank slate to start from.
