He paced the length of the living room, the Persian rug cushioning his steps. The letter, folded neatly, remained tucked into his pocket. He stopped, staring out the window at the cityscape, glittering in the late afternoon sun.

He felt the corners of his mouth tilt upward. He'd envisioned this scene countless times, imagined the moment of reckoning. Years of silent frustration, of being overlooked, of being the target of the cruelest jokes…all wiped away with a single, humble letter.

He chuckled, a low rumble in his chest that seemed to vibrate his bones. He reached for his phone, dialing a number from memory. “They caved,” he said, his voice laced with the sweetest satisfaction. “Finally.” He hung up, feeling like he could conquer the world.
