He’d almost forgotten about the tree. That, in itself, was a victory. The childhood sapling, now only a memory, had served its purpose and was gone. Charles had been so young when he planted it. Now, it was just a blank space. He clapped his hands together, the sound echoing in the silent grove.

The sun beat down on the freshly-tilled earth, awaiting the garden he had planned. He'd done it. The final obstacle was removed. He checked his watch, a flicker of a smile on his face. He'd even organised for the wood to be removed first thing.
