A wave of warmth washed over Maya as she stared at the grade. A ‘C’ stared back at her from the top of the test. She'd been certain she failed. Her stomach had been in knots for days, anticipating the worst. This was better. Much better.

She leaned back in her chair, a slight smile playing on her lips. It was almost a relief. Her brain, usually a whirlwind of frantic thoughts, felt oddly calm. She had scraped by, and that was all that mattered. Her fingers drummed a quiet rhythm on the desk as she pictured the look on Mrs. Gable's face when she saw Maya's name on the register. What an idiot.
