The fluorescent lights of the pawn shop hummed, a relentless buzz that mirrored the frantic rhythm of Amelia's heartbeat. She gripped her purse so tightly her knuckles were white. The air felt thick, heavy with the scent of old leather and forgotten dreams. A glint of gold caught her eye – a ring, nestled in a velvet display case. It was a classic solitaire, the diamond sparkling deceptively.

Her breath hitched. A knot tightened in her stomach, a familiar sensation these past few weeks. She pointed a shaking finger at the ring, the silence of the shop amplifying the pounding in her ears. "Can I… can I see that one?" Her voice sounded thin, reedy, almost lost in the vast emptiness.

The shopkeeper, a man whose face was a roadmap of cynicism, grunted and opened the case. He slid the ring across the counter. Amelia stared at it, the weight of the past pressing down on her. It was definitely hers. Or rather, her grandmother’s.
