The notice arrived in the mail, crisp and white. Martha stared at it, her fingers tracing the bold print: "Notice of Intent to Install a Fence." A wave of heat washed over her, making her palms prickle with sweat. She crumpled the paper, the sound echoing in the silent kitchen. The thought of a fence, a barrier, suddenly filled her with a profound sense of unease. It wasn't just the change; it was the unspoken message it conveyed, a shift in the delicate balance of their shared space.

She found herself pacing the living room, restless energy thrumming through her. The worn rug seemed to shift under her feet. She glanced out the window, at the neatly mowed lawn that was the neighbor's property. He’d always been so friendly, always shared the extra cucumbers from his garden. Now, this… this felt like a severance.

Later, she found herself making tea, then pouring it into a mug, then pouring it down the sink. She couldn't focus. The simple act of making tea became a frustrating maze. What was she going to say? She wanted things to remain how they were.
