Her stomach twisted, and a headache bloomed behind her eyes. Emily hated confrontation, and this felt like a brewing argument. The fence, she knew, was a symbolic act, a declaration of division. It made her feel…uneasy.

She walked out into her backyard, the familiar space suddenly alien. She looked at her own lawn, the same grass as her neighbor's, and felt a profound sadness. She suddenly didn't want to plant flowers, didn't want to get involved in any of the tasks she had been planning.

She sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak doing little to soothe her. She looked at her hands, the nails bitten to the quick, and felt a heavy weight settle on her chest.
