A wave of nausea churned in Maya's stomach. Her palms were slick with sweat. The accusation, delivered with clipped professionalism by the disciplinary committee, hung in the air like a noxious fume. She’d spent weeks on that research paper, her senior thesis, the culmination of everything.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, but instead, she just sat there, frozen, her gaze fixed on the mahogany table. The room was oppressive, the sunlight struggling to penetrate the tall windows. She felt as though she’d been plunged into an icy bath.

Later, walking back to her dorm, the campus seemed to mock her. The laughter of students, the rustling of leaves, the vibrant colors of the autumn trees – all of it seemed alien, distant. Every footstep echoed with the weight of the looming shadow.
