He’d almost managed to convince himself he was over her. The past was past, he'd told himself, as he put on his suit. But now, amidst the festive atmosphere, James felt a familiar hollowness in his chest. He stood near the open bar, feeling the cold glass of beer against his palm. He watched her from afar, the way her hand moved when she spoke, the subtle tilt of her head when she listened.

He noticed her talking to someone, her eyes lighting up. He felt a sharp pang, a quick stab of something he recognized. He quickly finished his beer and went to find an empty table. He felt a sudden longing for the simplicity of a time before their break-up.
